Double centuries went in vain in test cricket


People always says that test is the real cricket, as the name suggest it's really a test for a cricketer Or for a team to get a hard earned victory in this format, because unlike other limited format here you just can't be happy py performing well in a certain day Or for certain hours but you have to perform well in all the sessions, because test cricket is all about sessions and you win or lose according to the way you have dominated your opposite team in all the sessions.

Double centuries went in vain in test cricket

So here, will list only those double centuries which ends up in a losing cause however still double century is an amazing feat not every other batsmen can't get, it requires patience, discipline and sometimes luck too.

In the first Ashes test match which took place on 14/12/1894 at the historical Sydney Cricket Ground, after Australia posted a huge total of 586 thanks to a brilliant innings of 201 by Mr. Gregory and George Giffen's 161 and when England was allout at the score of 325 it almost looked all over.

To make the matter worse, Australia asked England to follow on and what followed was remarkable, following on England scored 437/all out, and then english bowlers demolished Australian batting line up and they were allout for 166, ***England won by 10 Runs and became the first team to win a test match after following on.***

In the 2nd test match between South Africa and Australia in the historical Melbourne Cricket Ground on Dec 31 1910 - Jan 4 1911, Australia scored 348, in reply South Africa scored 506 thanks to a brilliant score of 204 by Aubrey Faulkner, however Australia replied strongly and scored 327 thanks to a magnificent 159 by Victor Trumper, and a revived Australian bowling attack then shot down South Africa for 80, ***Australia won by 89 runs***

South Africa in the historical Adelaide ground from Jan 7-13 1911, South Africa batted first and scored 482, in response Australia posted 465 thanks to Victor Trumper’s 214, South Africa replied by making 360 and despite a fighting performance by Australia, ***South Africa won by 38 runs.***

In the 5th test match between England vs West Indies in The Oval, from Aug 12-17 1976, West Indies scored a mammoth total of 687/8 declared thanks to a scintillating batting display by Vivian Richards who scored a huge 291.


In reply England scored 435, thanks to Dennis Amiss's 203 who almost single handedly propelled England to the respectable total, West Indies in their 2nd innings butchered English bowling attack and scored 182/0 declared and then shot down England for 203 this time, ***West Indies won by 231 runs.***

and half centuries by Rahul Dravid, Shiv Sundar Das, Sadgopan Ramesh, VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid, Australia replied strongly but at last they were allout for 264, chasing 155 India started well but in the middle somewhere and they lost 8 wickets for 151, however Harbhajan and Sameer Dighe make sure that India wins, ***India wins by 2 wickets***.

In the 3rd Test match between Sri Lanka Vs West Indies in Colombo (SSC) from Nov 29 - Dec 3 2001, West Indies batted first and scored 390 thanks to Lara's 221, in reply Srilanka scored a huge 627/9 declared thanks to Hashan Thilakratne's 204.


West Indies batting completely failed except Lara who scored a century (130) again but West Indies shot down for 262, Srilanka chased down the mere 26 run with ease. ***Srilanka won by 10 wickets.***

Before Baz there was another Kiwi Nathan Astle who scored fastest double century in 153 balls against England in1st Test match in Christchurch from Mar 13-16 2002, England batted first and scored 228 and in reply New Zealand scored 147 in England’s 2nd innings thanks to Graham Thorpe brilliant double century 200*


, scored 468/6 declared. New Zealand scored 451 Nathan Astle scored 222 in 168 balls a quick fire innings which is still a world record, Astle was the last man to be dismissed, ***England won by 98 runs.***

In the 2nd Test match between Australia Vs India at Adelaide from Dec 12-16 2003, Australia batted first and scored 556 on the back of a brilliant innings of 242 by Ricky Ponting, in reply India was 85/4 at one stage, what followed was amazing and it reminded everyone of the Eden Gardens partnership of Rahul Dravid and Laxman once again where there hard efforts prevented an innings loss as well as a comback win, which eventually helped them to win the series back then, here the same duo once again thwarted Aussies and this time in the Aussies yard itself.


Thanks to Rahul Dravid’s 233 and Laxman's 148 India scored 523, in reply Australia was all out for 196 thanks to Ajit Agarkar's best bowling effort 6/41, chasing 230 India got initial hiccups however Dravid once again steadied the innings and helped India to chase down the total,*** India won by 4 wickets.***
