Top 5 innings in previous T-20 World cups in terms of runs scored

Top 5 innings in previous T-20 World cups in terms of runs scored

Although time and again it was proved on the field and in front of huge audience that cricket is more of a team game rather than depending on few individuals, but it also can't be denied that sometimes an Individual cricketers innings proved to be enough to bring an important win.

Every cricketer dreams of giving his best performances in the biggest stage of cricket that is the World Cup and if the team wins due to the same performance it will be count as a bonus, in T-20 World Cups there are some notable performers with the bat, here is Top 5 innings in Previously held T-20 World Cup matches :-

1. 123 by Brandon Mccullum against Bangladesh, 2012

It is an undeniable fact that Brandon Mccullum is one of those few cricketers who believe in positive cricket, as per my belief Brandon doesn't have any negative bone in his body, in this mindset you will play the game like the way you want to, without having any ounce of negative thoughts, Brandon has this mindset implemented in New Zealand cricket and now doing the same as England's coach.

In 2012, Sri Lanka hosted the T-20 World Cup, in the 5 th match of the tournament Kiwis faced New Zealand in Pallekale, Bangladesh won the toss and elected to field first, New Zealand Lost their first wicket at the score of 19, when opener Martin Guptill was bowled by left arm spinner Abdur Razzaq, after this, it was all a big Mccullum Show.

Brandon stitched a valuable partnership of 94 runs with another opener James Franklin, and when Franklin was dismissed, he made another 78 runs with the then skipper Ross Taylor, Mccullum got to the ton and was dismissed on the final ball of New Zealand innings but he made sure that his team reached to a good total which is 191 by the end of 20 overs.

Bangladesh were never allowed to get set for the chase, except Nasir Hossain's fighting half-century (50) nothing went right for Bangladeshi batters, they finished the match at 132/8,  New Zealand won by 59 runs.

2. 117 by Chris Gayle Vs. South Africa 2007

ICC, after understanding the value (both entertainment and Economic) of T-20 format, decided to take the format a little but seriously, international cricket  which has two formats (tests and one dayers),  with the longest format is facing a steep decline, ICC decided to include this (T-20) format in the international fixtures.

The biggest step which was taken by ICC was to start an World Cup tournament in 2007 for this format, this tournament was held after just 5 months of 2007 Cricket World Cup (50 overs in West Indies), host of this format was South Africa.

In 2003, the first 50 overs world Cup was played in South Africa (co hosted by Zimbabwe and Kenya) and the first match was played between South Africa and West Indies, on that day Brian Lara's brilliant century proved enough as West Indies defeated Proteas by just 3 runs but unfortunately in 2007, Chris Gayle's century wasn't enough to defeat South Africa.

On September 11, 2007, at Johannesburg,West Indies faced South Africa, skipper Shaun Pollock ask Windies to bat first, Chris Gayle (117) and Devon Smith (35) gave Windies an ideal start at, they made (then world record opening partnership) 145 runs for the first wicket, ultimately West Indies finished at 205/6, Chris Gayle scored the first ever century in T20 internationals.

However, South Africa batted brilliantly in their reply, Gibbs (90*) leading the way, South Africa chased down the total (208/2) with ease in 17.4 overs.

3. 116 by Alex Hales against Sri Lanka at Chattogram, 2014

After their disastrous 2015 World Cup, England management decided that they will also need to be at their best in White ball cricket, England had always had a good side in tests England's men's team (Seniors) had won only one ICC tournament (2010 T20 World Cup) in all these years..

Andrew Strauss, became Director of England Cricket team and he decided to bring some of the best changes that eventually transformed the way England used to play in limited overs cricket, under his supervision the best cricketers of white ball were included into the National team.

The thought process has been changed now this new Looking outfit play positive or aggressive cricket, talent was already there now it was mixed with aggression and it gave England a phenomenal Rise in limited overs cricket, which helped them to win their most elusive title the 50 overs World Cup, the team is now filled with matchwinners, few of them were: Jason Roy, Alex Hales, Dawid Malan, Joffra Archer, Liam Livingstone, etc.

In 2014, Bangladesh hosted the biggest spectacle of T20 cricket, in the 22nd match of the tournament England faced Sri Lanka, England won the toss and elected to field first, Sri Lanka lost their first wicket at the score of 4, but then experienced Thilakratne Dilshan (55) and Mahela Jayawardene (89) made 145 runs, Lankans finished their innings at 189/4.

It was a good total and it looked enough when Kulasakera took two wickets in the first over itself with nothing on the score board but it was  the day of Alex Hales to shine.

Alex Hales (116*) with Eoin Morgan (57) made 152 runs in their Partnership which took the match away from Sri Lanka, Alex Hales remained till the end and made sure that his side can chase down the total, it was fitting that he scored the winning runs for his team.

4. 111 by Ahmed Shahzad against Bangladesh,  2014

Pakistan cricket has one of the most unpredictable cricket history but over the years Pakistan has been always represented by talented cricketers some were able to make a mark in their international career, their are also some cricketers who despite being talented not able to survive in the international cricket  Ahmed Shahzad is one of them.

In 2014, hosts Bangladesh faced Pakistan in the 27th match of the tournament, Pakistan won the toss and elected to bat first, despite losing wickets it was Opener Ahmed Shahzad (111*) who held the innings together for his team.

Pakistan scored 190/5 in their 20 overs and Bangladesh had a daunting task of chasing down the total but the Pakistan bowling attack had them restricted to 140/7 by the end of their stipulated 20 overs, Pakistan won by 50 runs.

5. 103* by Tamim Iqbal against Oman, 2016

Bangladesh debuted at 1999 cricket World Cup in the international stage and over the years they have performed well in the limited or shortest format of the game, in the longest format especially in the overseas tests they need to improve but over the years Bangladesh has proved everyone that they are not pushovers.

In 2016, India hosted the T20 World Cup,  in the 12th match of the tournament Bangladesh faced Oman, after winning the toss Oman ask Bangladesh to bat First.

Bangladesh innings was held together by opener Tamim Iqbal (103*) while other batsmen played around him, Tamim scored a century and made sure that in process they are also batting out the opposition, Bangladesh scored 180/2 in their stipulated 20 overs.

When Oman started the chase, they had a poor start they were 14/2, but just when they started rebuilding rain interrupted the proceedings the score was at 41/2 in 7 overs at that point of timetime.

When the match started again target was reduced to 152 runs in 16 overs, just after resumption Oman lostv2 more wickets and Rain came back again, when the rain subsided the target was revised to 120 runs in 12 overs, which was highly unlikely, Oman at the end scored 65/9 and Bangladesh won the match by 54 runs (D/L method).
