Maiden over bowled in the last over of an Innings in IPL match

A maiden over in cricket means that a bowler bowled 6 deliveries and in those deliveries batsmen failed to score a single run, the maiden over not only gives a psychological advantage to the bowler , but gives a fielding team to exert pressure on the batting team, it was seen many times in cricket history that many batsmen failed after the pressure was created, most of the times the batting team need to change their strategies due to that, things can get more brighter for a bowler if he bowls wicket-maiden over, which means that in addition to a maiden over,he also got a wicket or two in the same over or if you're Lasith Malinga you can also get a 4-wicket maiden over.

In T-20 cricket, where game can change in a single ball, a maiden over and that is also in a final over of the match can be considered as a complete 'Gold', in Indian Premier League there are not many but only 5 instances of a bowler bowling final over of an IPL match as a maiden over.

1.    Kings XI Punjab vs Mumbai Indians at Mohali, April 25, 2008

2008 was the year IPL was initiated by BCCI and it definitely started with a bang with Brendon Mccullum blasting 158 in the first match of tournament against RCB for Kolkata Knight Riders and also winning the match by 140 runs, showing the signs that was about to come.

In the 10th match of the tournament, Mumbai Indians (who were captained by Harbhajan Singh at that point of time was going through a tough phase as they've lost 2 matches from the beginning itself) against Punjab who were captained by Yuvraj Singh.

Mumbai won the toss and asked Punjab to bat first and they lost the wicket of Irfan Pathan (who was opening) for just 8 runs, then ever reliable Kumar Sangakkara walked in and scored his personal best score of 94 runs, Punjab scored 182/allout (20 overs).

In reply, Mumbai were completely undone by a brilliant spell bowled by Brett Lee (4 overs for only 9 runs and 1 wicket), in the final over of the match Mumbai Indians required impossible 67 runs to win the match, Irfan bowled the final over to Nehra and the over ended as maiden, PXIP won the match by 66 runs, their was another controversial and an unfortunate incident happened at the end of the match which shouldn't have happened but....

2.    Deccan Chargers vs. Mumbai Indians at Durban, April 25, 2009

The second IPL was held entirely at South Africa, because at that point of time India was going through a multi phase general elections and government official have made it clear that due to the elections it will be tough to provide security required to run the tournament which was to played in almost every part of the country.

After the statement has been made official, BCCI looked for venues outside India to stage the second season of the tournament, on March 24, 2009 BCCI announced that the tournament will be held at South Africa and will start on April 18, 2009 and will end May 24, 2009 with 59 matches played throughout the tournament.

Mumbai Indians again ended at the wrong end (after a year when they were defeated at the same date by KXIP) this time they were defeated by Adam Gilchrist led Deccan Chargers.

Deccan Chargers won the toss and elected to bat first and reached 168/9 in their stipulated 20 overs with Herschelle Gibbs scoring a half century (58), in the final over of the match with Chargers on 163/  pacer Lasith Malinga bowled a 2-wicket maiden (runs came from legbyes which doesn't count against bowler)

Despite losing opener Sanath Jayasuriya for just 1 (4/1) run, both (Captain) Sachin Tendulkar (36) and Jean Paul Duminy (47) made an important 82 runs partnership at the score of 86 dismissal of Sachin and other quick dismissals of new batsmen Shikhar Dhawan (3) and a set Duminy brought Chargers back into the game, all the 3 wickets were taken by the left arm spinner Pragyan Ojha (3/21), Deccan Chargers defeated Mumbai Indians by 12 runs, Ojha was declared 'Man of the Match', Deccan Chargers were the winners of this edition, Mumbai Indians ended at the 7th position in the tournament.

Rising Pune Supergiants vs. Sunrisers Hyderabad at Hyderabad on May 06, 2017

In the year 2016, BCCI suspended both Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings for 2 years because of  spot fixing and betting scandal and announced two new franchises Rising Pine Supergiants and Gujarat Lions and all the cricketers from Rajasthan and Chennai franchises were dispersed into this two teams.

In 2017, new franchisee Pune was making the right noises and winning matches after matches under the leadership of Steven Smith, in the 44th match of the 10th edition of the tournament Sun Risers Hyderabad faced Pun, after winning toss, David Warner (Then the skipper of Sun Risers Hyderabad) decided to field first.

Despite losing openers, Rahul Tripathi (1) for 6 and a set Ajinkya Rahane (22) for 39, Pune were able to make a comeback through (Captain) Steven Smith (34) and Ben Stokes (39) partnership of 60, but both were dismissed in a space of few deliveries, Dhoni scored a valuable 31, which helped Pune to post a defendable total of 148 runs in stipulated 20 overs, Siddharth Kaul took 4/29 for Hyderabad.

Hyderabad despite getting a start, were 29/2 at 4.3 overs when Yuvraj Singh (47) joined Warner(40) at the crease, both stitched an important partnership of 54 runs, despite losing Warner, Hyderabad still had hopes as Yuvraj was still at the crease, Jaydev Unadkat started showing his skills, with his first ball of  the 17th over he took the prized wicket of Yuvraj Singh and 5 balls and 10 runs later he dismissed Naman Ojha (9).

In the final over of the match, Unadkat was defending 13 runs, his first ball was dot, with his second ball he took the wicket of Bipul Sharma (8), with the third ball Rashid Khan (3) and with the 4th ball he took the wicket of  Bhubaneshwar Kumar (0), the 5th and 6th ball were also dot balls, Unadkat took 5/ 30.

This was the 17th time when a bowler took a hatrick in IPL, with the wicket of Bhuvaneshwar, Unadkat completed 100 dismissals in IPL, RPSG defeated SRH by 12 runs, SRH went into playoffs where they lost to KKR by 7 wickets, RPSG went into finals against Mumbai Indians and unfortunately lost a close contest by just 1 run.

Sunrisers Hyderabad Vs. Punjab Kings, at Mumbai on April 17, 2022

BCCI decided to admit two new franchises Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat Titan to make IPL a 10 team format, this was the second time the tournament was played in 10 team format after 2011, The 2 new franchises are: Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat Titans.

With franchises can only retain 4 of their players, most of the team lost majority of their usual 11's to other teams and this also helped both of the new franchises as they bagged the services of most of these players.

In the ongoing tournament, Sunrisers lost their first two matches but came roaring back in style when they won 5 on a trot (only to lose two matches consecutively, as on 04/05/2022) with the help of some briliant individual performances from the batters and bowlers, with speedster Umran Malik making news with not only his blistering pace but also his ability to take wickets at the right time for his team.

In the 28th match of the tournament SRH met Punjab Kings after winning the toss, Captain Kane Williamson asked PBKS to bat first, Umran and his bowling partners let Punjab reeling at 61/4, but  Liam Livingstone (60) and Shahrukh Khan's (26) 71 runs partnership helped PBKS to reach at 132/5, by the time Livingstone dismissed (151/6 at 19 over), PBKS still hope for a good finish because big hitter Odean Smith was still there and Rabada was also there and he also a good hitter of the ball.

But PBKS hopes for making more runs were finished when Smith (13) was dismissed at the second ball of the final over bowled by Umran, castled Rahul Chahar and Vaibhav Arora at Naught on the 4th ball and 5th ball respectively, unfortunately he wasn't able to take the hatrick when Arshdeep Singh anyways got runout at the final ball of the match. SRH won the match by 7 wickets.
